Possible scams to be alert to

From Sam Setchell, Communications Officer: We have received details of two scams from elsewhere in the country. Please be alert to these and anything similar.

There is a 'Books for Schools' currently targetting parish priests.  They get a personal telephone call asking for them by first name and reminding them that they have sponsored some books for their parish school, which are now ready (printed with the church's name as sponsor) and payment is now required.  They tried to get me to pay £120 this afternoon and are very convincing!

"we were contacted by a young man today claiming to have spoken to (our priest), and telling those he contacted, that (priest) wished for him to be given money to visit his parents in Scotland. He had asked for both Churchwardens by name.  Needless to say he had not contacted our priest...(he)..is a very personable young man who evidently did some research, either off the church notice board or off the internet, to discover the names of the Rector and churchwardens. On finding us out, he then asked neighbours about other church members..."
